对于Athlete这队来自英国南伦顿Detpford的四人乐队进一步感兴趣，多少是由于从他们身上可以找到“Pavement在英国的答案”、“新 Steely Dan”、“The Beta Band的弟弟”等美誉。究竟这三大特质何以会同时发生在同一支乐队身上？这的确是多么不可思议的事。

　　Athlete的故事，始于歌手兼结它手Joel Pott、低音结它手Carey Willetts和鼓手Steve Roberts这三位在十四岁于足球场结识的朋友。在九十年代末，当他们二十出头的时候，三人走在一起组成了首队乐队，并踏足Camden一带演出，希望成为新Oasis是他们的目标。那时确曾有唱片公司跟他们接洽。

　　然而经过一段时间后，三人日渐发觉大家开始对传统的摇滚乐感到厌恶；另一方面开始热衷于The Flaming Lips和Grandaddy的他们，也视之为乐队的音乐新方向。于是乐队购置了一台十二轨数码录音机，从而以玩票性质队声响进行实验。当时他们已尝试摸索声效的处理，但由于乐队缺乏了键盘的技术而令他们屡受挫败，直至同样相识于少年时代的键琴手Tim Wanstall加入，正弥补了他们的不足。Tim的出现不但让他们由三人组变成了四人阵容，而且更在2000年初正式改名为Athlete。

　　经过一年时间写歌与彩排后，Athlete的Demo被交到Regal Recordings手上，从而令乐队被罗致旗下，成为The Beta Band的同僚。2002发表的处男同名作Athlete EP的成功，他们亦随即转投至主流公司Parlophone旗下。出版过《You Got The Style》、《Beautiful》、《El Salvador》这几张单曲之后，乐队交由曾跟Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds、PJ Harvey和Sparklehouse合作的《Victor Van Vugt》所监制的首张专辑《Vehicles & Animals》亦告在早前面世。

　　Athlete笔下的歌曲，有着是Steely Dan般的长青美好调子，但演绎出来却有如Pavement那样的古怪流行曲架构与主唱；来得听似一首传统的结他流行曲，但个中却又穿插着Tim的 Synth演奏与声效，甚至是鼓机节拍，Athlete的音乐便是这样典型得来却又有点不寻常。

　　在四人的合作上，它们所强调的是彼此之整体性，所有作品都是共同的结晶。Carey说：“我们以乐队的姿态一起写出所有歌曲，Athlete不是只由一人带着一首完成了的歌进入录音室然后拿着结他弹给队友听的那种乐队，而是关于我们四人一同在实验。”所以在《Vehicles & Animals》的唱片封套内，你不会找到个别成员的名字，因为Athlete就是一个整体。

　　当外界拿Steely Dan、Pavement和The Beta Band跟来自英国南伦顿Detpford的Athlete相提并论之余，听过他们的处男专辑《Vehicles & Animals》之后，请容许我再加多一个联想——Beck。

　　当Athlete在去年初出道的时候，某些英国音乐传媒总爱把他们的乐风归纳为Britpop看待，但乐队的音乐熏陶其实是很美国的东西，像歌手 Joel Pott便有一把介乎Beck与Stephen Malkmus之间的嗓音。像由加上Treatment的鼓声与木结他和弦带出的近作单曲《El Salvador》，便予人很Beck的感觉：《Shake Those Windows》和主题曲都令人想到Beck的Folky曲目，只是后者较为修饰而已。《New Project》则仿如以钢琴Ballad手法来带出Pavement的优美曲目那样。

Since bouncing to prominence seven years ago with the spirited, electro-tinged, indie-pop of their Mercury-nominated debut, ‘Vehicles And Animals’, Athlete have established themselves among the UK’s finest songsmiths. The south east Londoners have sold more than a million copies of their three hit albums (the other two being 2005′s ‘Tourist’ and 2007′s ‘Beyond The Neighbourhood’); packed out venues across the land; picked up an Ivor Novello award; and topped both the UK’s album and airplay charts.

‘Black Swan’, their fourth album, is a musical summary of everything Athlete have been through; the good, the bad and the ugly. But although its songs burn with literate emotion, this certainly isn’t a downbeat record. In fact, the album begins with the hurtling FM rush of glorious first single, ‘Superhuman Touch’, which catapults the album into life with the opening line, “I’m on fire and nothing’s gonna hold me back”.

The album reaches its climax with ‘The Awkward Goodbye’, an intensely personal tale of love slipping away; the snappy ‘Magical Mistakes’, a giddy gush of proud, parental love; and ‘Rubik’s Cube’ which, according to Joel, “Sums everything up. It’s about puzzling through life, working it out as you go along and having to deal with its uncertainties. That’s the magic of life, really.”
